Namibia #2 - Kolmanskop

December 2020

35mm film

I visited the ghost town of Kolmanskop armed with expired film. My thinking was that the old film would enhance the feeling of spooky nostalgia, neglect and decay. My heart sank when I first saw the developed pictures. The images appeared to be too dark and faded. Missing were the bright colours of the wall paint and the yellow glow of the sand spilling through doors and windows. Yet, on reflection, I have grown to love these images. They are different to the other bright images I have seen of Kolmanskop. There is a uniqueness in the mistake. The faded, grainy darkness evokes the feeling of ghostliness and nostalgia I was looking to capture in the first place.

See the next leg of my journey here.
